Treginnis Isaf

  38 pupils and 4 staff had a 'marvellous' week at Treginnis Farm. The weather was fantastic. Even though it rained on Thursday for our beach visit, we all enjoyed sploshing in the water, scrambling on rocks and looking for sea creatures in the rock pools. Mealtimes were an eye-opener, with some children able to eat four helpings of the home-cooked healthy food!!
      <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  Early starts came as a shock at first, with the children required to be booted up and ready for work at 7:30am sharp! Then, at 8:30am we had a good breakfast of cereals, porridge and toast. Next it was back to the boot room to get kitted up for the second task of the day. A hearty lunch followed some free time when children could enjoy the field or play in the 'Treginnis Dreamboat'. Afternoon farm tasks ranged from tending the gardens to picking up horse dung from the paddock. A healthy dinner was then provided before some children were once again needed to tend to the milking of the goats.
  The children were divided into three working groups and the farm jobs are rotated so that each group does each job at least twice during the week. The second time around everyone feels more like a real farmer! Additionally the groups were each on a rota where they were required to set out the tables for the meals and clear up the dining room after meals.

  We finished the week with a talent show where groups sang, danced and performed a comedy show. It was a thoroughly enjoyable week and the children learned so much about hygiene, food production, animal welfare and running a farm. Some children shed a few tears waving goodbye to the animals and to the Treginnis staff. A huge thank-you to Mike, Les, Nick and Rob who helped us with the farm tasks and to Barbara, Sue, Lynne and all of the kitchen staff who kept us all so well fed.
  On behalf of the staff, Mr Gumbley, Mrs Paszkowski, Mrs Tipper and me, Miss Moore, we would like to say a big thank you to all of the children who made it such a special week and to all of the parents and carers who generously paid for their children to go and who provided them with the necessary protective clothing.

   The school has been very fortunate to have had the quad area refurbished by some volunteers from Wilmott Dixon working in partnership with Birmingham City Council. Some of the area has been decked and now looks wonderful with picnic benches and stripey parasols. A quantity of flowering plants and shrubs were also donated and the Gardening Club braved the rain to get these in the raised beds around the decked area.

Gardening at last!

Thankfully the weather has now changed and the ground temperature has risen, so this week Year 4 have been able to start gerdening. Today (Friday, 23rd April) two groups from Year 4 put their backs into clearing weeds and digging in new compost to make ready the beds for planting. They also managed to plant potatoes, early cropping carrots and dwarf beans. Additionally, they have prepared two tyres for planting-up as herb beds. Next week, two further groups will continue preparing the beds, plant courgettes, herbs, tomatoes and peas.
The children thoroughly enjoy this project and it is a great leveller, with children of all abilities able to fully participate. They also learn whilst working as we uncover all sorts of minibeasts and they find out about how plants grow.
Science Week Assembly

The school has become home to a huge variety of habitats created by pupils as part of a competition. There are homes for gorillas, penguins, rabbits, fish, and even dinosaurs! During Thursday's assembly members every year group reported to the rest of the school and explained what their classes had been learning about. Nursery sang a wonderful song all about Spring and showed us how all the creatures who had been hibernating during the winter would wake up at the start of Spring. Year 1 have had their hands deep in green gunge ! They are making paper from old newspaper. Year 2 have learned all about dinosaurs and fossils. Meanwhile, Year 3 studied the weather and wrote their own weather forecasts. Maybe they will be more reliable than the ones that we usually get! A professional chef's visits to the Year 4 classes was the subject of their report whilst Year 5 told us all about volcanoes and even showed a video of their model volcano erupting. Finally, Year 6 gave us lots of information about fossils and showed us fossilised 'poo'.
Bikeability

The playground has this week been busy with trainee cyclists learning how to ride their bikes in a way that will hopefully keep them safe on the road. Under professional coaching the Year 5 children have learned how to check their bike before riding it, making sure that the saddle is not loose, checking that the brakes work, ensuring that the gears are functioning and feeling the tyres to see if they are correctly inflated. They have learned all about stopping safely and looking behind before signalling when turning at a junction. The 4 day course was free and the children enjoyed learning these very valuable life skills in a fun way. See gallery for pictures.
